Beserker Barrage!

If there's one thing I've learned in 2023, it's that if you wait long enough, something interesting will pop up on clearance at a store you're at. If you're really lucky, it's something that you skipped because the MSRP just didn't sit well with you. Case in point, never thought I'd ever see it, but there have been several Fate Figma popping up. One such figure is Figma 560 - Beserker Miyamoto Musashi, which apparently is so unpopular that during Black Friday, I was able to find one, with the Preorder Bonus, for $68 CAD plus shipping, which really doesn't happen very often to me,

Considering I used the cheapest shipping option, the figure arriving in like 3 weeks was pretty good.

From Fate/Grand Order, this figure is everyone's favourite dual sword wielding Servant, but decked out in a Bikini and armed with Gunblades, rather than her more traditional Japanese inspired wardrobe.

I've never played the game, but I don't believe that slight alterations like this change the personality of the character that much - it's not like the more typical Alter versions. I say that because while the parts do concur with a stylistic change, her faceplates and more importantly, love of food, don't seem that different from the first set:

  • 1 x Main Figure

  • 3 x Faceplates (Neutral, Smiling, Winking)

  • 11 x Posing/Gripping Hands

  • 2 x Gunblades (Long and Short)

  • 1 x Goblet

  • 1 x Rice

  • 1 x Fancy Rice (Preorder Bonus)

  • Base/Stand

Out of box, Beserker Musashi looks pretty good. I didn't look, but if she's anything like OG Musashi, this version probably lost a bit in translation, usually the size of the curves and general lankiness. She's basically got the proportions of the typical swimsuit Figma. While the swimwear is nicely sculpted, it shouldn't overshadow the fact that there's some great sculpting on the other parts of the body, including the boots and the lacking of theone leather legging. Of course, the actual curves of the body are nothing to scoff at either.

Like most of the figures that carry swords, there are Hilts that that you can remove from the Scabbard for when the actual weapons are in the hands of the figure.

Faceplates are nice and clean, as you typically get with a Figma figure. Definitely enough in place that there's no mistaking this for any other character. Hairstyle has changed compared to the OG design.

General Articulation for this figure is pretty good for a Figma. No pull down hips, for whatever reason, which is kind of strange. So standard hip articulation for this figure. Of course, issues are complicated due to the cover on the left hip and of course the giant rack of Scabbards on the lower back of the figure. No waist articulation and the shoulder are at full capabilities. So overall, yeah, pretty much your typical figure. It's perfectly functional, and you can get some decent poses out of it, but with some small changes it could have been so much better.

Paint Applications are the usual level of clean. For the most part, you'll find that masking and paint work is on point, with no significant flaws to note. Detailing apps are generally sharp. You'll notice that the gold trim is a bit heavier than one would like, which is unfortunately a reality of using such coloured paint. Decal work is again pretty sharp looking, though there is some notable chipping on the symbol on the back of the jacket.

Finally, Build Quality. Overall, nothing too much to complain about here. Things fit together nicely and joints do their job at holding poses. Finishes on parts are smooth, with no rough areas of poorly masked seams observed. The one off thing I found, however, was that the hilt of the shorter Gunblade was found to be warped out the box, and it's hard to say if this was bad luck or an issue at the factory. What I can say is that that particular Hilt doesn't quite fit into the Scabbard perfectly, and I always worry that it's going to snap coming out of the Scabbard one day.

Overall, I mean it's your typical Fate Figma. It's not particularly good, and the main appeal is of course the outfit and weapons, which to be fair applies for a wide variety of these figures. I'm not sure exactly what it is about this particular one that made it not sell very well. The whole reason I even looked overseas for one of these is I remember this being on sale on either BBTS or some other online store, and me thinking I could do better, and sure enough, I did. I just didn't expect this sort of pricing. Maybe its the fact that Beserker Musashi is so visually different from any of the other characters, it turned people off?
