Here Kitty Kitty Kitty....

In recent weeks, the Summer Event Exclusives from the Dragonball lineup started showing up to the homes of collectors. Of the four choice, I bought Beerus and Whis (with the other two being Nappa and SSG Goku).

Beerus was featured in both the Battle of the Gods movie and the Super series, and is the God of Destruction in our heroes universe. He's basically the cosmic garbage man, responsible for terminating planets that have run their course so new things can take its place. Earth was due for destruction, our heroes couldn't touch the guy (I'm not sure even in their SSGSS forms whether or not they're an even match), and its was only through the bribe of good food that Beerus decided Earth was worth keeping around.

Appropriate decision making tree, given the fact that Beerus is effectively a giant cat.

Released back in 2016, Beerus was built on the 1.0 Dragonball body, which has that distinctive diaper shaped groin piece. I don't have an original to compare it to (because prices had gotten insane for pretty much all of the exclusives) but based on photographs it looks like the exclusive has different coloured shoes and a glossier mantle.

Contents, as far as I know, remain unchanged:

- 1 X Main Figure

- 3 X Head (Neutral, Angry, Yawning)

- 7 X Posing Hands

- 1 X Tail

No energy effects of stand.

I believe Beerus was made towards the end of the 1.0 body run, and as such the actual sculpt was pretty good. Proportions appear in check, and the head sculpt isn't some scrunched up raisin. Body musculature is nicely done. You can cheat on some poses using the tail for balance. The event exclusive colouring certainly looks pretty. It's just really unfortunate that this still runs on a 1.0 body platform.

The 1.0 body is still quite competent from an articulation perspective, just not as well designed in the hips and the shoulders. Points of articulation include toes, ankles, double jointed knees, hips, waist, mid torso, standard shoulders, double jointed elbows, wrist, neck head, and tail. They did give Beerus pull down hips which does help with the range of motion, though Beerus isn't going to be doing the side splits.

Paint Applications are the usual Figuarts level of quality. The work on the mantle in particular is well executed, as those glossy paint apps are just brilliant. Other paint applications include the waist band/cloth, the various gold bands, and of course the facial detailing. Some minor paint masking issues are present, but nothing worth losing sleep over.

Build Quality wise, a few rough corners and finishes on the parts. Otherwise, assembly, QC, joint strength, and other typical criteria are as expected.

For an old timer, Beerus does pretty good. The additional articulation would be welcome, but at least from an aesthetics perspective there really isn't any reason for me to jump on a 2.0 of this guy. As with Chi Chi, the head sculpts are varied and very expressive, with my personal favourite being the sleeping one, because there's just so many wrong ways to use it.

Above all, it's a giant humanoid cat so you know it's going to be a good time.

Well that's enough for this entry. Next up - Whis!
