I Don't Think He Can Read....

From a personality perspective, Gilgamesh from the Fate universe is one of my favourites. The guy just out right does not care what anyone thinks, and in general, everyone is beneath him. Truly a persona that is befitting the one known as "The King of Kings". HIs most well known form would be his Archer form, where he dons that sweet, sweet golden armour, is armed with a lance, and basically summons weapons from all over history to skewer his enemies.

Of course, now that we're in modern times, things have gotten a bit more complicated, with characters no longer tied to even one type anymore. That's why we have so many variations of characters, including Gilgamesh, who at the very least has a Caster form. The Figma of this iteration, I guess, didn't sell particularly well, enough to make it the pack in for various lucky draw boxes. Compare this to his Archer form, that sold so well they released a second run of the figure in colours that were slightly more anime accurate.

I gotta say, for the 9,900 Yen or so MSRP, Gilgamesh is kind of light when it comes to what's included, and that's compared to other Fate Figma, as well as the Caster version of the character:

- 1 x Main Figure

- 3 x Faceplates (Neutral, Glaring, Shouting)

- 8 x Posing/Gripping Hands

- 1 x Magic Tome

- 1 x Battle Axe

- 1 x Base/Stand for Tome

- 1 x Figma Base/Stamd

I mean, I guess you could argue the size of the axe is pretty big, and is the material of at least two weapons. At the same time.. it's 9,900 Yen.

So the guy went from being a Golden God to someone doing a cosplay of Abu the Monkey from Aladdin. I mean, I guess he's supposed to look like a Magi or something, but the little vest is just... too much. The dead bird he has wrapped around his waist probably doesn't matters either. The character does retain some hints of his armor, namely the gauntlet on his right hand and the sash around the waist.

The good news is that because Giglamesh isn't exactly a bulky guy, the proportions that were give to him look about right, and the colours appear to match official art I've looked at.

Faceplates are appropriate for the character in terms of expression and overall shape. While I'm aa fan of battle cries, I gotta give it up for that look of general disdain being the face I keep on the figure.

Articulation is definitely less than stellar. The figure has a waist, albeit one with limited motion, but at least it's there. The rest of the upper body is generally uninhibited, so overall you're going to be fine from that perspective. The lower body though.. my God is that a mess. So there's the general bulk, which really doesn't help matters by restricting range of motion, but at least you're doing some movement. The bigger problem is despite what you may think, the sash actually inhibits front and rear leg motions, so basically you're only able to swing the legs out sideways. Overall, this guy is going to be doing a lot of standing poses.

Fortunately, Paint and Build are more up to the normal expected levels. Detailing paint apps are crisply applied, and there's some beautiful on the various gold parts of the figures. Gold paints are smoothly applied, with no rough textures or other similar anomalies. Build wise, all joints hold their position, and there were no QC issues to report regarding parts finishes or poor fit.

Caster Gilgamesh is a nice looking figure with some good production values, but the biggest flaw it has is that the character design is boring, which combined with the general lack of accessories and posing options is probably how the figure ended up in the overstock pile. Last year there were some Fate figures, but those were the niche ones - Gilgamesh here is a mainline FGO, and in generally shouldn't have been difficult to sell.

Guess you can't it right every time.
