I'll Put Some Web In Your Eye

If you dabble in the world of Third Party Transformers, you'll know that creating Multiverse Variants of existing characters is also a very popular choice when it comes to coming up with product. I've reviewed a few of these, including the BingoToys BT-02 Wind Girl, their version of Windblade. Their latest product, the BT-4 Spider Lady finally released and shipped to customers, including myself..

The box for Spider Lady is a bit on the rough side, and I don't mean that art wise. The actual box itself is a nice thick cardboard but the quality of the box isn't great. I guess it's still better than other boxes where the quality is poor AND the cardboard is thin.

Contents of the box are as follows:

  • 1 x Main Figure

  • 1 x Spider Abdomen

  • 8 x Posing/Gripping Hands

  • 2 Sets (Flesh Colour, Gold) of 4 Faces (Neutral, Mouth Open, Happy, Ahegao)

  • 2 x Daggers

  • 1 x Blaster

  • 6 x Insect Legs

  • 1 x Battle Mask

  • 1 x Base/Stand

Like the BT-02, what you won't find are instructions. Instead, you get a link on the box to a Youtube video that you need to follow in order to get the instructions to convert into Spider mode.

Whether you choose the Flesh or Gold coloured faces is preference, as they both have the same expressions. Visually though, its been mentioned that the Gold is too rich. Also, there's no lipstick on the Gold face, so it's pretty much Flesh by default for me.

Expression wise, they're all pretty awkward looking, so I stick with the Ahegao for comedic purposes.

Other display options include the ability to rearrange the fangs around her face into something that Hela might use, and the Battle Mask, which is basically a replacement piece for the crest on the head of the figure.

Here she is right out the box. I have to say that whoever put this colour scheme together did a fantastic job. The Black, Gold, and Purple are a great combination and in person this is a very striking piece. The majority of the colours are not chrome, which is understandable given the nature of the product. The eyes, however, ARE chrome and they're very, very shiny.

I actually don't have a clue whether or not the abdomen should be attached in robot mode, so I just randomly swap depending on what I"m trying to show off.

Here is Spider Lady compared to Wind Girl and the TransArts Spider Queen. You can make out the pedigree of Spider Lady and seeing how much she draws upon the original design of Wind Girl. Having said that, it's mostly in the arms and legs themselves as the main body is actually very different. Spider Queen was more for size comparison.

Conversion to Spider mode is.. interesting. I mean, like many Third Party figures, especially those with an obviously non bulky robot mode, you're petty much expecting a Partsformer. It's mainly the Abdomen, which I covered, though it should be mentioned that do need to install the six smaller insect legs. The weapons do have dedicated spots on the Spider mode, if you choose to do so.

Spider Lady is significantly better at posing than Wind Girl. when it comes to posing. This can be traced back to the fact the torso of this figure is completely different. Joints necessary for transformation were added, but there were also joints that serve no purpose other than to allow Spider Lady to do various ab intense poses. Hips have some pull down function and the thighs slip along the top like with Nicee, Shoulders have slight Butterfly Joint style operation, with the rest of affiliated articulation being pretty standard, with the exception of the wrists as the hands are on static ball joints.

Paint Applications on Spider Lady, like Wind Girl, are simple but well executed. The Black surfaces are all base plastic colour, whereas everything else is painted with a metallic paint, just like Wind Girl. This gives the figure some sheen, but not a full glossy look. There are some decals and smaller accent paint apps involved here as well. There are no glaring QC issues with the paint work, and it feels almost like the budget saved on having functional packaging and no supporting documentation was spent on making sure the paint work didn't suck.

Build Quality was pleasantly good - you're generally not assured of consistent product quality when dealing with these one off companies, especially when they're making their own product, but so far so good from Bingo Toys. The same concerns are ones that I would have of any newcomerr, to be honest. The joints were all in good in being able to hold positions. Tolerances were generally on point, though the various joints in and around the waist area were kind of squeaky and tight. Hands had appropriate grip, which is more than I can say for the grips on the weapons - those are poorly designed to start with. No issues with finishing flaws could be observed on the figure.

Overall, a strong offering from Bingo Toys. It's not a particularly over engineered toy, but for the asking price it's a nice way to add some variety to your shelves. Unless of course, you have an issue with non canonical characters or figures that lean more towards the curve appeal side of things. I'm really curious what their next release is gonna be, as there are only so many Fembots to go around. Maybe a Chromia? So long as they keep them sexy, people will keep buying them.
