Mightiest Thor

With the year winding down, I finally have some time to keep chipping away at that backlog of stuff I have lying around. Today, I look at something that I got as part of the random BBTS sales, the Kotobukiya Bishoujo Thor statue.

So by now, if you're even remotely interested in the Marvel universe, you will know that Jane Foster is imbued with the powers of Thor, becoming a separate entity from the the usual guy. In the comics, there's even an actual Lady Loki, who has a bit of more complicated backstory than what we got with Sylvie. I mention Lady Loki simply because there's actually a Bishoujo of her that is meant to be paired with this one.

Being a statue, you don't get a lot of accessories. In this instance, it is Mjolnir and a helmeted head.

Thor is sculpted in a pretty typical pose, Mjolnir raised and one leg resting on a raised surface. The two tone base looks like of weird, though I suspect it has something to do with Lady Loki possibly having a different coloured base. Overall it looks solid, and I particularly like the folds in the fabrics, used to give them all a sense of dynamic movement.

Face is definitely more mature looking than you'd get from the usual Shunya Yamashita art work, and to be honest it's not a bad thing. Of course, this could again be something that the sculptor took liberties with and did it themselves. You can still make out the traditional Shunya trademarks in the eyes and general facial shape, as well as something that you don't usually see - a well defined nose. The detailing in the hair is a bit on the crude side, something that isn't unique to this particular statue. Perhaps the weakest spot of the entire statue is highlighted here - the wrap around her her waist isn't a separate piece, but rather, is simply painted on with masking. It looks fine from the front but from above or below, that section just looks weird.

Speaking of weird, the eyes look odd from the side as the expected dome shape isn't there.

Unlike most of the Bishoujo line, Thor actually has muscles and the statue isn't afraid to show off her guns. Nothing wrong with that in my books. Fingers aren't too bad on the right hand, though they're a bit weakly sculpted on the left hand.

Mjolnir and other body armour parts are sculpted nicely. To me, it seems like the detailing on the metallic parts is a bit softer than it ought to be, and I have to wonder if that is due to the selection of materials. Overall strong paint work further highlight the quality sculpt with no obvious flaws observed.

Thor isn't as busty or provocative as other Bishoujo, so if that's your bag then this isn't your thing. But if you're looking for something more on the tame side, or if you're a Mighty Thor fan, this will do nicely.
