So a few weeks ago I discovered how much nicer the Dragonball Super: Super Hero figures compared to their mainline counterparts, I decided to find a Goku. Fortunately for me, Goku figures, unless they were really coveted for a different outfit, are actually fairly easy to find at MSRP, which I did despite being like 6 months behind schedule.
As this is built on a tried and true platform, buying this figure really was all about the window dressing. I don't recall this being a particularly expensive figure, as it was priced pretty much in line with most entry price Goku releases:
- 1 x Main Figure
- 4 x Faceplates (Neutral, Surprised, Angry, Focused)
- 7 x Posing Hands
The hands I think I've seen on every single Goku figure that's ever been released, so there is truly no surprises there.
Just going to speed it up for this one - there's nothing out of place when it comes to Articulation, Paint, or Build Quality.
You should notice, however, that this is probably the sharpest looking Goku figure they've released. A large part of the heavy lifting is due to the use of a darker orange that, more importantly features a really matte finish. This is complemented by blues which are more subdue, and I think this combination actually makes Goku's outfit resemble less of a hunk of unpainted plastic that happens to be orange. What's nice is that the joints on the knee are of the same plastic, so there's no discontinuity there either. Flesh tones appear to be consistent with what they've used before.
Otherwise, it's really all about the faceplates. No, they're not all serious types, and I'm guessing that in Super Hero neither Goku nor Vegeta really got serious or anything, which would probably explain the face selections. But what they are, however, are fantastically made. The general expressions haven't really been done on any Goku figure, even the Saiyan Raised on Earth version. It's nice have a Goku that has the large, expressive eyes his base form is known for.
Also, like Vegeta, this figure also features faces with those extra lines to show facial musculature like brow lines, cheeks, and so on. It's such a simple thing, but for some reason they didn't do it until now. Truly makes all the difference.
I know this isn't the same Goku in that one is base and one isn't, but truthfully the face plates are really the same but with different colours for the eyebrows and pupils. The ones this figure comes with are truly special.
So that about does it from my end. You either love or hate Goku Figuart releases, so there's not much to discuss there. But, I will say if you don't have a Goku yet, or if you're struggling to find the Saiyan Raised on Earth version for a base form figure (unlikely, because I think they reissued it at the same time this was released), honestly I'd say just find yourself one of these. It won't cost any more, but the demand isn't as high and more importantly, this Goku honestly just looks so much better than the other one.
