The Chilling Sound of Your Doom!

A little while ago, a fellow collector was kind enough to gift me a S.H. Figuarts Cooler from Dragonball Z, specifically the two anime movies featuring said character. I honestly don't remember much about the character, as my memory of the movies are pretty fuzzy, but I do recall scenes here and there from both films.

Cooler is the older brother of Frieza, and at the time was a greater threat than the Emperor of the Universe himself. Like Frieza, Cooler also possessed the ability to transform, and the figure captures the character in his final form... which says to me one day we will likely see a base form or better yet, the metallic form of Cooler.

I believe that Cooler was a P. Bandai exclusive, which is why he came with the fancy shipper box which contains a typical art box for the Dragonball line.

Contents of the box are as follows:

- 1 x Main Figure

- 1 x Tail

- 4 x Feet (Flat, Curved)

- 8 x Posing Hands

- 1 x Unmasked Faceplate

There's no crossed arm effect for Cooler, which is unfortunate, but to be fair it's not like I exactly recall that pose being iconic for the character. I also couldn't find any signature hand gestures for the character, which explains the generic poses included.

Curved feet are a nice touch, as you can pose Cooler crushing someone's chest and not have to worry about the figure toppling over.

The assembled figure looks large and imposing, which is what you'd expect for Cooler. AS with most Dragonball Z characters, they're never super detailed, even the armoured ones, so I find what has been presented as being acceptable. Some panel lining would have been nice, as always. They did put some shading into the muscles, which does help them stand out against the purple of his flesh. Colours seem about right.

The two faceplates of Cooler - one with his battle mask on, and the other unmasked and with a smirk. Simple, properly done, and appropriate for the character.

Articulation is generally not a problem for Figuarts, and Cooler is no exception. All the expected joints are there, and the tail and giant feet help to stablize the figure, though if you want to pose with the tail off the ground chances are you will need to use a stand. Shoulder articulation is probably the weakest aspect of this area, mostly due to the fact the giant white shoulder pads. Second weakest would be that the giant battle helmet interferes with head tilt, though that may not be an issue depending on how you pose your figure.

Paint is.. alright. I mean, it's not bad or anything, but it's not exactly super complicated either, especially since most of the heavy lifting is done by the plastic itself. As mentioned, the actual paint apps themselves are pretty clean, even the smaller details like the finger and toenails.

Build Quality is also the standard, expected Figuarts level. You'll generally have no issue holding any poses, with good parts tolerances and general QC of the finishes. The only real issue I found with the figure is that the top of the head seems to detach a bit too easily.

All-in-all, another solid entry into the line up. Technically, there's nothing much wrong with the design of this figure. It's a matter of actually liking the character enough to get one. I honestly have no idea how popular Cooler is, as pretty much all the hype is around the Saiyans. It doesn't look like places are sold out of Cooler, so maybe he wasn't that popular.
