So... if Beerus was probably one of the better made 1.0 figures, then I guess it's no surprise that Whis, his attendant, is probably one the WORST 1.0 figures ever.
Contents of the box aren't too bad, and are pretty much what I'd expect:
- 1 X Main Figure
- 3 X Headsculpts (Normal, Angry, Happy)
- 7 X Posing Hand, including Spoon Hand
- 1 X Magic Staff
Based on the size of the staff, I'm guessing you can give the staff to Beerus as well, who features open fists about the right size.
I've honestly no idea how different the Event Exclusive is compared to the general release. Based on some pictures, my best guess is that the trim on the black parts of the outfit are now silver rather than white. Maybe the hair now has a pearl finish on it? Otherwise, it honestly looks about the same to me.
Speaking of looks, admittedly that's one of the strong points of this release - it actually LOOKS quite good. Especially since you can't see the hips. With that robe basically covering everything up, the proportions generally look bang on.
Of course, that's kind of where the problem lies with this figure.
I'll be brief - Whis has possibly the worst articulation of any Dragonball Figuarts I've ever played with. It doesn't matter how many joints they gave him - his legs are trapped within the hard plastic skirt of his. While Whis does have full waist, head/neck, and mid torso articulation, shoulder movement is also limited by the mantle, which unlike Beerus is not cut at the shoulder.
Basically the best you're gonna be able to do is exciting variations of standing poses. Thank goodness
Or you could be like me and find creative ways to use that spoon of his.
Or maybe you can find some other amusing way to use his heads. Either way, you're not doing anything dynamic with this guy.
Paint and Build Quality? As expected - above average at the very least. As a background character, Whis really does look quite vivid. As an added bonus, you won't have to worry about joints failing to hold poses with this guy.
So yeah.. that was super fancy Event Exclusive Whis, who is effectively a glorified statue. I don't get why they couldn't take a few liberties and introduce a seam, along with softer rubber for the skirt, or at least give him the standard shoulder/mantle cut so at least he would have full shoulder range of motion. Unless he gets a different outfit design, I really don't think we'll be seeing another release of this character. OK, I think I've had enough. Time to move on to something that can actually pose.
